Shelley Smith

Shelley Smith is a native of Raleigh, N.C. currently pursuing a Bachelor of Art + Design, concentrating in fibers, at North Carolina State University. She received her diploma from the North Carolina School of the Arts, and began her college education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She took a hiatus from her formal education in 1999 to move to New York City where she apprenticed under sculptor/fashion designer/performance artist Elisa Jimenez.

As an artist, designer, and a craftsperson, Smith primarily uses textiles as her medium but often combines fiber with other sculptural elements. She uses traditional and contemporary techniques to create work that is meaningful, personal, and expressive. Smith gains inspiration from history, tradition, the spiritual connection with the natural world, and uses these themes as points of departure in her work.
